About MastCellAware

INSPIRATION

The "ah-ha" moment came in 2011 while attending a presentation to healthcare professionals on a rare disease called mastocytosis. Tufts University professor Theoharis C. Theoharides spoke of research which had uncovered how mast cells are related to so many systems and disorders.

He drew an analogy based on the “canary in a coal mine” concept. Describing mast cells as the “canary in the body” he noted how mast cells can actually be an early indicator of other potential health disorders.

canary in a coal mine ‎(plural: canaries in a coal mine)

1. (idiomatic) Something whose sensitivity to adverse conditions makes it a useful early indicator of such conditions; something which warns of the coming of greater danger or trouble by a deterioration in its health or welfare.

MISSION

MastCellAware is passionate about raising awareness of the important role that mast cells play in all our lives. Our goal is to pique the interest of family, friends, and the medical community, while having a bit of fun with the image of the small but mighty mast cells.
