About MastCellAware

INSPIRATION

The "ah-ha" moment came in 2011 while attending a presentation to healthcare professionals on a rare disease called mastocytosis. Tufts University professor Theoharis C. Theoharides spoke of research which had uncovered how mast cells are related to so many systems and disorders.

He drew an analogy based on the “canary in a coal mine” concept. Describing mast cells as the “canary in the body” he noted how mast cells can actually be an early indicator of other potential health disorders.

canary in a coal mine ‎(plural: canaries in a coal mine)

1. (idiomatic) Something whose sensitivity to adverse conditions makes it a useful early indicator of such conditions; something which warns of the coming of greater danger or trouble by a deterioration in its health or welfare.

IDEA: WHAT'S THAT ON YOUR SHIRT?

Wanting to spread the word and help start the conversation about these little known cells, we set out to create fun and "groovy" graphic interpretations of mast cells to be printed on shirts. Dr. Theoharides reviewed, tweaked and named our first illustration “Mast Cells in Activation”.

Though initially constructed to sell some shirts in the hopes of uniting a growing community and spreading awareness for the little researched mast cell, MastCellAware.com soon grew into an opportunity to help educate as we continue to learn too.

YOUR PURCHASES SUPPORT DONATIONS

If you've made a purchase, we hope you love your MastCell-A-Wear. A portion of every sale is donated in support of mast cell research and awareness. All remaining funds help cover production of our unique MastCellAware-designed products, as well as aid in the production of new mast cell awareness materials such as informational cards, flyers, and web hosting expenses.

Contributions made by our MastCellAware project support causes such as The Mastocytosis Society, mast cell research by Dr. Theoharides and other mast cell disorder causes, while sharing A LOT of awareness along the way.

THANK YOU! for making a difference.
